A small bamboo genus that is extremely adaptable and hardy and being the bamboo most commonly cultivated in the British Isles

Excellent as a beginner’s bamboo

 

Uses: This is lovely ornamental bamboo as it creates an oriental feel to the garden due to its large leaves and evergreen nature.
Site: From full sun to quite part shade, exposure tolerant

Height: 3 – 5m average 4 m
Spread: 1 – 3 m in 10 years, clumping
Culms: Max: diameter 2 cm olive green culms with pale sheaths
Leaves:

30x3 cm broad leaves, long and drooping.
The underside of the leaf is greyish and has a characteristic greenish marginal strip

Soil:

Unfussy tolerates a wide range of pH types though prefers a   moist soil and can spoil in constantly waterlogged conditions
