Fargesia ‘Rufa’

Origin - Shrubby forests of Gansu and Sichuan China further north than most bamboo's.
Newly introduced - Due to the prolific quantities of culms it generates it is a likely reason why it is one of the feeding plants for the giant Panda
Running species (leptomorphic)
| Uses: | Gives lovely contrast to a tall bamboo and probably the best bamboo for container growth as it fills the pot quickly and requires little maintenance except feeding. Good for path edgings and low dividing hedge. |
| Site: | Sun or partial shade – more exposure tolerant than most bamboos. |
| Hardiness: | Very hardy down to -29 C. |
| Height: | Short but bushy (1 – 2m). |
| Spread: | 2.5 – 4ft in 10 years - well behaved clump formers. |
| Culms: | New culms sheaths are lightly tinged pale orange/red or shrimp pink. Coloration is likely to be brighter on plants growing in container or alkaline soil than those on rich neutral or acid soil. Earliest bamboo to shoot, short culms are fully developed by late spring (May) and a few later on appearing in the summer. |
| Leaves: | Normally pale green, similar to the Fargesia Murielae ‘Simba’ leaves point neatly down from the many branches at each node. |
| Soil: | Grows well in any soils but permanently wet or very dry. |
Probably the best bamboo for container growth as it fills the pot quickly and requires little maintenance except feeding.
